Ayurveda~ Understanding Your Constitution
Ayurveda literally means the ‘knowledge of life’. It is the world’s oldest holistic healing system
still in use today.
The ancient principles of Ayurveda originated in India more than 5000 years
ago.
They have been passed down as a sacred oral tradition and within the Veda’s- the oldest
scriptures known to humankind. The essence and practices of Ayurveda have no borders or
boundaries. It is an art and science for all who wish to return to a state of internal and external
harmony.

How to Establish Your Constitution
Go through the following checklist twice. To establish your prakruti (essential nature/ constitution
from conception), initially check the boxes that relate to your long-term tendencies or the way that
things have been most of your life. The 2nd time through, check the boxes that relate to your
vikruti (current state).  The checklist is merely a guide...its accuracy is determined by the
objectiveness of the individual. It is best to see an Ayurveda Consultant or Practitioner to get a
clear and accurate assessment of both your prakruti and vikruti.














Prakruti and Vikruti
Each individual has a prakruti or inborn constitution, a unique composition of the three doshas.
One’s current state is known as the vikruti or imbalance stemming from deviation from our innate
nature. Once we establish our prakruti and vikruti, we can use the wisdom of Ayurveda to
consciously make choices regarding food, lifestyle, yoga, exercise, career path, environment and
every other aspect of our life to maintain balance, and therefore have the energy to fulfil our
highest potential.

There is no law that requires disease as part of life. Only ignorance of the Laws of Spirit can do
that.  You do not have to be sick. You will continue to experience sickness until you decide to take
personal responsibility for and become an active participant in monitoring and maintenance of your
own health.

Waiting for illness to appear and following the old health care paradigm, of diagnosing and treating
disease in search of symptoms relief as a primary objective, is to be continually operating from a
reactive state; whereas, appropriate self-education and personal monitoring of your own bodies
response to your lifestyle, diet and exercise choices is to continually operate from
proactive
position.
Personal responsibility for health has become a popular maxim for the 21st century.
We are beginning to implement proactive approaches for health rather than simply reacting to
disease.

Breathing is one of life's most basic necessities. Adults take in an average of almost 25,000
breaths each day and that's just at rest. While it's true that most of us don't stop to think about
the breathing we do each day, it's important to recognize the health benefits of doing so.

Take in a breath right now. It comes so naturally, doesn't it? You may not realize that you can
greatly improve the way you feel, inside and out, just by consciously controlling how you breathe
for as little as an hour each day.

When you breathe in the air around you, your lungs transfer the oxygen into your blood. This
oxygen is necessary for life's building blocks, our cells, to live and create within us. When you
breathe out, carbon dioxide and other metabolic wastes are removed from the blood and back out
into the air.

For those with impaired respiratory function, such as cardiac patients
or asthma sufferers, the result of improper breathing is a catastrophic build-up of toxins and
extremely low levels of oxygen in the blood. The good news is that even those of us with impaired
